Epilepsy
Epilepsy can form as a consequence of suffering a traumatic brain injury.
Epileptic seizures occur when signals being sent to the brain are interrupted causing a temporary change in the way the brain works. Epilepsy is one of the most common brain conditions in the UK and can be broadly classified into two types - partial seizures and generalised seizures.
There are many factors which have been linked to the development of epilepsy and in some cases the exact cause is never found. The more common factors are severe head injuries, brain damage during birth and brain tumours.
There are occasions where patients are diagnosed as suffering from epilepsy where it was actually discovered they were just suffering from a migraine or other minor condition. This often results in them receiving unnecessary drugs and treatment that impacts upon their life and of course causes them and their family unnecessary worry and stress. On other occasions patients have been correctly diagnosed as suffering from epilepsy but the type and severity of the epilepsy has been misdiagnosed and they have not been prescribed the correct drugs or treatment. Epilepsy is treated using Anti Epileptic drugs (AEDS) of which there are many different types and historically often more than one AED is prescribed at the same time. AEDS are known to have wide ranging and often very intrusive side effects. When prescribed several at the same time this can sometimes result in severe side effects which greatly impact on a person's life sometimes delaying their educational and personal development.
Those who suffer a head injury may also be at an increased risk of developing epilepsy. Depending on the percentage risk, your solicitor may advise you to settle any claim for compensation on a provisional damages basis meaning that you could return to the court for a reassessment of the value of your claim in the event that you did develop epilepsy.
