Cycle Helmets prevent Serious Head Injury

Cycle helmets reduce significantly the chance of serious head injury, according to a recent study by Dr. Jake Olivier of University of NSW.  Drawing together the results of many studies worldwide, which looked at cycle helmet use by 64,000 injured cyclists, the study found that overall, cycle helmets reduced the chance of a serious head injury by nearly 70%.

Helmets also cut the chance of a fatal head injury by 65%, any head injury at all by half and the odds of facial injury by a third.  Olivier said his review found,

‘pretty solid evidence that bike helmet use in a crash or fall significantly reduces injuries to head and serious head and facial injuries’.

The study also found that cycle helmets do not damage the neck, as some earlier research indicated however, Olivier stressed that helmets were only designed to protect the head and that they were not ‘a panacea for cycling safety’.  The best strategy to avoid injury or death on a bike is to avoid accidents in the first place, with measures such as dedicated bicycle lanes.

However, even with improved provision for cyclists on the roads, accidents will still happen, so cycle helmets are still an important and simple way for cyclists to protects their heads and their lives.  This research will lend support to those who call for mandatory helmet laws, which currently only apply in a few countries such as New Zealand and Australia.  If you or a loved one has suffered a head or brain injury in a cycling accident which was caused by someone else and want to know how we can help, please contact Andy Shaw who is in the Headway Solicitor's Directory or call us on 0800 073 0988.

What our clients say

We know that we have been extremely fortunate to have had such a consummate PI lawyer in Andy acting on our behalf but we have also been blessed by having had his support, trust, friendship and loyalty throughout. We cannot ever thank him enough.

The compensation Nicola has received has helped her move from a tiny council flat into a massive bungalow which has been specifically adapted. It has enabled her to have a better life.

If it was not for the help of my solicitor I don't know where I would have been today. He provided a great deal of emotional support and secured compensation at various stages from the insurance company to fund my treatment and allow me to live. He was there from start to finish.

Higgs & Sons acted for us for 5 years until our daughters claim for personal injuries was finally settled. Ian remains a trustee of our daughters trust fund and we now look upon him as a friend.
