Epilepsy after head injury: Is it preventable?

Epilepsy after head injury: Is it preventable?

Up to 20% of all epilepsy is suffered following a head injury.  So research into new treatment which may prevent epilepsy after head injury could be an exciting breakthrough and human clinical trials may start in a few years.

How does it work?

Researchers found that a severe head injury disrupts the blood-brain barrier, so the blood protein albumin leaks into the brain, triggering inflammation which in turn can cause overexcited neurons and epileptic seizures.  By blocking this cause, the drug can prevent seizures.

Daniela Kaufer, UC Berkeley associate professor of integrative biology said,

'This is the first-ever approach in which epilepsy development is stopped, as opposed to common drugs that try to prevent seizures once epilepsy develops.'

The research also explains for the first time how a brain injury caused by a blow to the head, stroke or infection causes epilepsy; by identifying the breach of the blood-brain barrier, the wall of cells lining the blood vessels in the brain.

What our clients say

We know that we have been extremely fortunate to have had such a consummate PI lawyer in Andy acting on our behalf but we have also been blessed by having had his support, trust, friendship and loyalty throughout. We cannot ever thank him enough.

The compensation Nicola has received has helped her move from a tiny council flat into a massive bungalow which has been specifically adapted. It has enabled her to have a better life.

If it was not for the help of my solicitor I don't know where I would have been today. He provided a great deal of emotional support and secured compensation at various stages from the insurance company to fund my treatment and allow me to live. He was there from start to finish.

Higgs & Sons acted for us for 5 years until our daughters claim for personal injuries was finally settled. Ian remains a trustee of our daughters trust fund and we now look upon him as a friend.
