Concussion is very much in the headlines on sports such as rugby union, but what is it? It is the temporary loss of consciousness or the confusion caused by a blow to the head. It can be short-lived with no discernible long term effect however, it can be the sign of a more serious brain injury which in some cases can be fatal. The difficulty for medics assessing people after concussion is trying to find those with more serious brain injury and a new test may help them.
The lead of a recent US study into concussion, Dr Uzma Samadani, said at present,
‘there is no gold standard diagnostic, no blood test, and no imaging study for definitively concluding that a patient has experienced a concussion.’
This is why her study has been looking at new eye-tracking technology to measure eye movements while patients watch a music video. As it objectively assesses someone’s ability to complete a complex process of coordination, it appears to identify those still suffering with concussion more accurately than any current diagnostic tool. It is also non-invasive, inexpensive and extremely quick.
At Head Injury UK we welcome any advances in diagnosing head injury quickly since this will save lives. We hope that this promising study will help improve the assessment of concussion, which at the moment can often miss a brain injury. If you or a loved one has been affected by a head injury caused by someone else and you want to discuss a possible claim, please contact Andy Shaw or call one of our specialist head injury solicitors on 0800 073 0988.
We know that we have been extremely fortunate to have had such a consummate PI lawyer in Andy acting on our behalf but we have also been blessed by having had his support, trust, friendship and loyalty throughout. We cannot ever thank him enough.
The compensation Nicola has received has helped her move from a tiny council flat into a massive bungalow which has been specifically adapted. It has enabled her to have a better life.
If it was not for the help of my solicitor I don't know where I would have been today. He provided a great deal of emotional support and secured compensation at various stages from the insurance company to fund my treatment and allow me to live. He was there from start to finish.
Higgs & Sons acted for us for 5 years until our daughters claim for personal injuries was finally settled. Ian remains a trustee of our daughters trust fund and we now look upon him as a friend.
