International Helmet Awareness Day 2013

Like a lot of sports horse riding is not without its risks.  With a rider’s head being up to 13 feet off the ground, it is particularly vulnerable to injury especially since horses can move at great speed and be unpredictable.

Horse Riding Head Injuries

The rate of serious injury suffered from horse riding, according to USA data, is estimated to be about the same as for motorcyclists.  Racing and eventing are particularly dangerous types of the sport.  Unsurprisingly most head injuries occur falling off a horse, though around 25% of head injuries are suffered from being kicked in the head when on the ground, for example whilst grooming.

Riders 4 Helmets: International Helmet Awareness Day 2013

Apparently the same statistics showed that 15% of all hospital visits for horse riding injuries involved a head injury with 5% being for concussion, double the rate for other major sports.  Tragically, around 100 people die per year from equestrian activities.  This is why Riders 4 Helmets organises International Helmet Awareness Day.  This year it is on 22 June, to help raise awareness amongst horse riders of teh importance of wearing a properly fitted and certified helmet, to prevent avoidable head injuries and deaths.

What our clients say

We know that we have been extremely fortunate to have had such a consummate PI lawyer in Andy acting on our behalf but we have also been blessed by having had his support, trust, friendship and loyalty throughout. We cannot ever thank him enough.

The compensation Nicola has received has helped her move from a tiny council flat into a massive bungalow which has been specifically adapted. It has enabled her to have a better life.

If it was not for the help of my solicitor I don't know where I would have been today. He provided a great deal of emotional support and secured compensation at various stages from the insurance company to fund my treatment and allow me to live. He was there from start to finish.

Higgs & Sons acted for us for 5 years until our daughters claim for personal injuries was finally settled. Ian remains a trustee of our daughters trust fund and we now look upon him as a friend.
