New Premier League head injury rules

For the new season, Premier League players will now be better protected if they suffer a head injury.  These new rules have been introduced following criticism last season of when Hugo Lloris was allowed to continue playing by his manager, after he had lost consciousness playing against Everton.  It also follows a number of high profile examples in the Brazil World Cup, when players who appeared concussed were allowed to play on.

New Concussion Measures

  • Players suffering a head injury must leave the pitch.
  • Team managers will no longer decide if a player continues to play.
  • The final decision will be with the club doctor.
  • Home teams must have a third "tunnel" doctor
  • The "tunnel" doctor will serve as an extra pair of eyes to spot potential concussions and watch TV replays to see the severity of incidents.
  • An awareness campaign will make players and managers aware of the dangers of head injuries.
  • Premier League players will undergo baseline neurological assessments annually to help doctors measure their recovery time if they suffer concussion

Headway, the brain injury charity, have welcomed the new rules, calling them,

"An important step forward in the protection of footballers … Concussion is an evolving injury with symptoms that may take time to manifest, and if you don't get it properly assessed, it may be too late."

What our clients say

We know that we have been extremely fortunate to have had such a consummate PI lawyer in Andy acting on our behalf but we have also been blessed by having had his support, trust, friendship and loyalty throughout. We cannot ever thank him enough.

The compensation Nicola has received has helped her move from a tiny council flat into a massive bungalow which has been specifically adapted. It has enabled her to have a better life.

If it was not for the help of my solicitor I don't know where I would have been today. He provided a great deal of emotional support and secured compensation at various stages from the insurance company to fund my treatment and allow me to live. He was there from start to finish.

Higgs & Sons acted for us for 5 years until our daughters claim for personal injuries was finally settled. Ian remains a trustee of our daughters trust fund and we now look upon him as a friend.
