Public Apology to Brain Surgery patient

Martine Plummer initially made good progress following surgery to relieve brain pressure which was causing her severe headaches.  The procedure was carried out in 2006 by the pioneering surgeon Henry Marsh, however poor after care led to emergency treatment for ‘septic shock’ within days.

Permanently Disabled

Whilst Martine survived, she was unable to speak for six months and though now able to talk, can no longer walk unaided.  She also suffers poor memory, hearing, vision and balance.

Complaints Ignored

So, she brought a claim against the surgeon that her deterioration had been avoidable, if only he had listened properly to complaints she made about her worsening symptoms, in the days after the operation.

Public Apology

The case recently settled for an undisclosed amount.  Importantly the surgeon also publicly apologised to Martine, through his barrister, for his substandard care which fell below what she had been entitled to expect.
