Skiers to wear helmets

At this time of year, when many people are heading for the mountains to ski or snowboard, it is worth remembering to enjoy these sports and other winter sports safely.  Following recent news that former F1 Champion Michael Schumacher is slowly rehabilitating following his tragic skiing accident last year, a coroner has also urged those going skiing to wear a helmet.

Fatal Skiing Accident

At the inquest into the death of Aleksander Owens-Thurston, who suffered a fractured skull in a skiing accident at St Anton in February 2014, the coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death.  He also called for safety improvements at the Austrian resort where the boom arm of a snow machine had been left across the ski run.  An experienced skier, 23 year old Aleksander is thought to have crashed into the snow machine and died shortly afterwards.  He was not wearing a helmet.

Helmet Research

Many studies have been carried out into the effectiveness of helmets in preventing or minimising the effects of traumatic brain injuries among skiers and snowboarders.  These clearly support the use helmets and Peter McCabe, Chief Executive of Headway UK said,

‘Headway has been campaigning for skiers and snowboarders to wear a helmet for a number of years.’

What our clients say

We know that we have been extremely fortunate to have had such a consummate PI lawyer in Andy acting on our behalf but we have also been blessed by having had his support, trust, friendship and loyalty throughout. We cannot ever thank him enough.

The compensation Nicola has received has helped her move from a tiny council flat into a massive bungalow which has been specifically adapted. It has enabled her to have a better life.

If it was not for the help of my solicitor I don't know where I would have been today. He provided a great deal of emotional support and secured compensation at various stages from the insurance company to fund my treatment and allow me to live. He was there from start to finish.

Higgs & Sons acted for us for 5 years until our daughters claim for personal injuries was finally settled. Ian remains a trustee of our daughters trust fund and we now look upon him as a friend.
